Welcome to the Tobermory Lifeboat
Tobermory Lifeboat Station was originally opened in 1938 with the Watson
class "Sir Arthur
Rose", a gift from Miss Margaret Lithgow of Glengorm. This boat
was on show at the Empire Exhibition in Glasgow during during 1938 where
she was tended by the then Station mechanic the late Jimmy Bell.
Through manning troubles the station closed in 1947 with the "Sir Arthur
Rose" being transferred to Mallaig.
The station was re-opened in 1990 with the Waverley class "Ralph and
Joy Swan",which was replaced in 1991 by the Arun
class "City
of Bradford IV", which was replaced by the present lifeboat the Arun
class "Ann Lewis Frazer"
Anne Lewis Fraser [52-41]. Built in 1988 at the Berthon Boat Yard in
Lymington Hampshire, she was built at a cost of £552,000 generously
provided by the Hugh Fraser Foundation. Anne Lewis Fraser served
as Barra Lifeboat until May 1998 when she was slipped at the Alex. Nobles
boatyard in Girvan Ayrshire for an extensive refit.
52-41 was re -launched on 24th June 1998 and passed out. After a training
passage via Isle of Man and Portrush in Northern Ireland she arrived at
Tobermory 29th June 1998 ,Anne Lewis Fraser was put on service on 5th July
1998, she is to be replaced by a Severn class Lifeboat in 2003.
Tobermory Lifeboat Station is open to the public by arrangement with
the Hon. Secretary John Wilshire.

The Station is also open during the Summer for about two and a half
hours in the morning and again in the afternoon
Tobermory Lifeboat will soon have an alongside berth making boarding
much easier.
